We are blessed with a lot of excellent locally sourced food and drink on the Isle of Wight. This includes fish and seafood, delicious cheeses, sumptuous afternoon teas, award-winning wines, beers and spirits and much more besides. We feel sure you won’t be disappointed!
Why not take a gourmet gallop across the Island with us, sampling some of the best food and drink it has to offer. What you see below is NOT a tour in itself – this would be much too much to fit into one day. These are only some suggestions and is a far from comprehensive list of places you COULD visit to sample their wares if you wish. You tell us what kind of food and drink (or area) interests you most and we will then plan a personalised itinerary for you.
Ventnor - visit Ventnor Exchange – the buzzing creative hub that lovingly gives us the Ventnor Fringe Festival each year. Choose from their large selection of drinks and sample their platter of IOW cheeses, which they will happily talk you through.
Shanklin – take a stroll through the village, maybe even pay a visit to Shanklin Chine – the Island’s first tourist attraction and where time has stood still. Opportunity to pay a quick visit to Cavanagh & Baker, The Island Made Emporium. They sell just about everything the Island produces!
Enjoy a tea or coffee or something cold in the magical kingdom known as Old Thatch Teashop. Why not team this up with one of their delicious home-made scones with jam and cream or a piece of cake!
Let’s press on across the gorgeous Mersley Downs to Adgestone Vineyard – take an audio guided walk and learn about the process first introduced here by the Romans! No prizes for guessing that this will be followed by a wine tasting. (Local beers and other drinks and food are also on sale here.)
On to the neighbouring Garlic Farm to learn about ‘all things garlic’. Dependent on the time of year and weather permitting, take a tractor trailer ride across their fields (with on-board live commentary), followed by some well-earned garlic goodies. Garlic bread and IOW tomato flat bread seem a must, but many other tempting nibbles are also available.
Ryde - Head for the beautifully situated IOW Distillery’s Mermaid Bar for a spirit-tasting which will include a selection of gins, sea salt vodka and a couple of rums.
Cowes – home of sailing. Take a short stroll around town, perhaps visiting at least two great local shops, Joli and Medina Bookshop. A variety of wonderful artisan goodies to be had here – you will be spoiled for choice!
Yarmouth. Here we strongly suggest you sample the goods on offer at Isle of Wight Fudge Company (including wonderful ice creams). But don’t leave before trying a traditional IOW doughnut from Grace’s Bakery, made according to a recipe dating back a couple of hundred years. They taste incredible and a little ‘Christmassy’, in that they contain more than a hint of cinnamon. You could always take one/some away with you if you are too full to manage one now!
