Jane’s story:

A Life of Travel, History & Connection

Jane’s path to becoming one of the Island’s most trusted private guides is anything but ordinary. With roots in London, years spent living and working abroad, and a lifelong curiosity about people and places, her story weaves together experience, passion, and a deep love for sharing the Isle of Wight with travellers from around the world.

A woman with blonde hair wearing sunglasses, a black and white patterned dress, black leggings, and sandals, smiling while holding on to a metal handrail on stone stairs outdoors with rocky terrain and stone ledge behind her.

Jane originally hails from London, where she now once again spends a fair bit of time visiting her son and daughter-in-law (hence she can easily escort as well as guide those of you travelling to the Isle of Wight from London).

She spent several years working in Germany (where she married a German national) and speaks the language fluently, often guiding in German as well as English. In fact, that’s how she came to start guiding on the Island in the first place – working for a German travel company - even before she lived here.

At the time she still lived on the mainland’s south coast in Barton-on-Sea (halfway between Bournemouth and Southampton) and commuted over – Barton being directly opposite the Needles. Frequently gazing across at this magnificent rock formation from there, at some point it beckoned her and her husband over, involving a complete relocation.

She left behind a career in Teaching English as an Additional Language – something she enjoyed and has been a particularly useful training ground for continuing to work with people from all over the globe.

So strong was her passion for the Island and its history that she then immediately started this company, Isle of Wight Guided Tours, almost before unpacking her belongings! The company took off from day one and it has kept her busy ever since, now more than 12 years later.

In her free-time she thoroughly enjoys the arts and travelling – in particular to India, where she has spent quite a bit of time over the last few years. She is very much a ‘people person’ – lively, enthusiastic and fun-loving but also hard-working and dedicated and as interested in gaining knowledge as in imparting it.

She is never happier than when showcasing all the wonders that the Isle of Wight has to offer. For her, spending her time roaming and rediscovering the Island on a regular basis with interesting and lovely people from different corners of the earth doesn’t really feel like a ‘job’ but is one of the best ways of spending her time that she can possibly imagine!
